How Ping handles your data, clearly explained.

Stand: 4. November 2026

1. Verantwortlicher

Ersel Uysal (Kyrex Studio)
Klarastr. 5
47226 Duisburg
Deutschland
E-Mail: developer@kyrexstudio.org

4. Zwecke und Rechtsgrundlagen

  • Bereitstellung der App und ihrer Funktionen (Account, Karte, Pings, Follower, Chat, Push-Benachrichtigungen): Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. b DSGVO (Vertrag).
  • Sichtbarkeit in der Nähe: Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a DSGVO (Einwilligung).

1. Controller

The controller responsible for data processing in the "Ping" app and on this website is:
Ersel Uysal (Kyrex Studio)
Klarastr. 5
47226 Duisburg
Germany
Email: developer@kyrexstudio.org

2. What data we process

  • Account: email address and password (stored encrypted).
  • Profile: username, date of birth, gender and optionally a profile picture and bio, plus your level and experience points.
  • Pings: description, category, position (latitude and longitude), creation and expiry time. We also store which pings you visited or checked in to.
  • Location for "Visible nearby": your approximate current position, only if you turn this feature on.
  • Social features: follows and followers, blocked users, chat messages, read status and your settings for read receipts and the typing indicator.
  • Push notifications: a device token of your phone, the platform (Android or iOS), your language setting and which types of notifications you want to receive.
  • Reports and moderation: if you report a ping, a profile or a chat message, the reported content, the reason and your user ID. For a reported chat message we store a copy of the text so our moderation team can review it, even if the message has since been deleted. If we remove content or suspend an account, we store the decision, its time, the duration of the suspension and a copy of the affected content.
  • Locally on your device: theme, language and map filters. This data never leaves your device.

3. Location data

Ping needs your location to show you the map around you and to place pings. Your location is only used while you are using the app. There is no background tracking.

Your position is only shared with other users if you actively turn on "Visible nearby". This feature is off by default. Others can then only see you within a 300 m radius. When you turn visibility off, your stored location is deleted immediately. Shared locations older than one hour are deleted automatically.

The position of a ping is visible to all users while the ping is active.

4. Purposes and legal bases

  • Providing the app and its features (account, map, pings, followers, chat, push notifications): Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (contract).
  • Visibility nearby: Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (consent). You can withdraw it at any time in Settings.
  • Push notifications: additionally your permission in the operating system, which you can withdraw at any time in your system settings.
  • Security, abuse prevention, handling reports and moderation: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in a safe platform) and Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR where we are legally required to handle reports (Digital Services Act).
  • Checking the minimum age of 16: Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR.

5. Service providers and recipients

  • Supabase (Supabase Inc.): hosting of the database, login, real-time features, server functions and file storage (profile pictures). Supabase processes data on our behalf under a data processing agreement.
  • Google Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google Ireland Ltd. and Google LLC): delivery of push notifications. Your device token and the notification's title and text (e.g. sender and content of a message) are sent to Google.
  • Google Firebase Crashlytics (Google Ireland Ltd. and Google LLC): crash reports so we can find and fix errors in the app. This transmits error data, device model, operating system, app version and a random installation ID, but not your name, email address, messages or location. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in a stable app).
  • Resend (Resend Inc., USA): sending system emails such as confirmation and password links. Your email address and the email's content are transmitted.
  • Map services: map tiles are loaded from Stadia Maps (Stadia Maps, Inc., USA) or OpenStreetMap (OpenStreetMap Foundation). This technically transmits your IP address and the visible map area. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.

Where data is transferred outside the EU, this is based on appropriate safeguards, in particular the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. Other users only see what you publish yourself (e.g. profile and pings). We do not sell data and do not show ads.

6. Notifications

While the app is open, it creates notifications locally on your device. When the app is closed, we send notifications about new messages, new followers and new pings nearby as push notifications via Firebase Cloud Messaging. For pings nearby we only use a location you shared via "Visible nearby". You can turn off each type in the app's settings or in your device's system settings. When you log out, your device is detached from your account.

7. Retention

  • Expired pings are hidden from the map but remain stored in your profile until you delete your account.
  • Your shared location is deleted as soon as you turn visibility off, and at the latest one hour after its last update.
  • Device tokens for push notifications are deleted when you log out or once they become invalid.
  • The text copy of a reported chat message is deleted as soon as the report is closed. If it leads to a suspension, the text is kept as part of the record of the moderation decision.
  • Records of moderation decisions are kept as long as necessary for traceability, handling complaints and defending legal claims.
  • All other data is kept as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your profile, pings, messages, followers, location data and device tokens are permanently removed.

8. Your rights

You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object (Art. 21). You can withdraw any consent at any time with effect for the future.

You can change or delete much of your data directly in the app. For anything else, email us at developer@kyrexstudio.org.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority.

9. This website

When you visit this website, our hosting provider processes technically necessary data such as your IP address, time and requested page in order to deliver the page (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The font is loaded from Google Fonts, which transmits your IP address to Google. We use no cookies and no tracking. Your language choice is only stored in your browser.

10. Changes

We update this privacy policy when the app or the law changes. You can always find the current version on this page and in the app's settings.
